Storing Ginger Root at Home

Many people storing ginger roots at home as supplies. There are some tips that we can apply so that the ginger root that we store is more durable. That way, we don’t have to worry about running out of ginger in no time. Ginger is often used as a flavor enhancer in cooking, as well as creating a spicy and warm sensation. Not only does it improve its taste, but ginger also contains gingerol compounds that can prevent infection and relieve various diseases.

1. Choose fresh ginger

Make sure the ginger you will buy is still in a fresh condition, so it can last longer when stored. The trick is to pay attention to the skin. Choose ginger whose skin is not too thick and fibrous, and looks smooth. 

Fresh ginger skin is usually easily peeled using only nails. Other features, the texture is still dense and hard. The spicy aroma is still smelled.

Avoid buying ginger whose surface is filled with spots and mushy. Because the sign ginger has been displayed in the store for too long.

2. Store ginger in an airtight plastic

Put the unpeeled whole ginger in a plastic bag, make sure the air inside the plastic has been removed. Then, store it in the refrigerator, precisely in the vegetable drawer. Ginger can be stored for three weeks or more.

3. Dry with tissues

If the ginger has been used in half, wipe the cut part with a tissue until dry. This is so that the remaining moisture in the ginger can be absorbed. After that, just put the ginger in a plastic ziplock and store it in the refrigerator. 

4. Process ginger into pickles

One effective way to extend the shelf life of ginger is to process it into pickles. Peel and slice the ginger segments to taste. Then, put the pieces of ginger in a jar filled with vinegar. Cover the jar tightly, then store it in a sun-protected place, such as a refrigerator or kitchen cabinet. 

Pickled ginger can last up to a period of 2-3 months, and can be used as a mixture of dishes.

5. Store in the freezer

To make it more durable, we can also store ginger in the freezer. Peel and grate the ginger, then pour using a spoon over the surface of the baking paper or parchment paper forming several small circles. 

Freeze until solid, then store in an airtight container. In this way, ginger can last up to six months. 

When we want to cook it, all we have to do is mix the frozen ginger pieces into the dish. If you want to eat it as a salad dressing, let stand first until it melts.
